Who would have thought that an unassuming young Italian girl would one day become leader of the Indian National Congress, a position she has held since 1998. Sonia Gandhi may have been shattered by Rajv Gandhi’s assassination in 1991, but the tragedy also brought her into the spotlight and she has not looked back since. Though initially reluctant, she took up the leadership of the Congress. While she has no role in the government, few people doubt her sway over it or question who the real power behind the throne is.
